Contest: Most Visible Night Cyclist for November

October 31, 2008 by David Longdon Leave a Comment

The Fall 2008 edition of Velocity’s Most Visible Night Cyclist contest is underway. This year’s edition will include prizes! The contest originated last year as a way to inspire the hordes of invisible cyclists whizzing through the streets of Seattle to get illuminated.

We had some inspirational entries last year:

February 2008 winner: Josh Larios

January 2008 winner: Jason Babcock

December 2007 winner: Jeff Youngstrom

November 2007 winner: Derek Pearson

As you can see, the Down Low Glow was a key part of most of the winner’s ensembles. This year I’m hoping we see at least one illuminated scraper bike enter the contest.

Also, to pump up the competition a bit, check out this upcoming Bay Area event, Rollin’ Lightin’, which aims to be visible from space:

Picture
Rollin’ Lightnin’ is an opportunity for Bay Area bicycle commuters to show off their illumination style.

Seriously, they don’t even know what dark (not to mention cold and wet) is down there (speaking as one who grew up in San Francisco…), but it looks like they are ahead of us Seattleites in advancing the cause of nighttime visibility.

Contest guidelines:
Email me one or more pictures of the lighting setup in action (or a link to a web page as some previous winners have done), along with a description that will help folks who wants to replicate your system.

Entries will be judged on:
**Practicality
**Attention-getting-ness, and
**Creativity

In the event of a tie, the winner will be chosen on the proximity of their home to downtown Seattle.

If you won last year, you can enter if you have a completely new configuration to show us.

Deadline for this month’s contest is end of business Monday, November 24.

Prizes Galore
In addition to all the fame winners get by being posted on this blog, the November winner gets a pair of Cordarounds bike to work khakis generously donated by Chris Lindland of Cordarounds:

I’ll announce the winner at the end of the November.

Stay tuned. More great prizes in the months to come!
