May 16: Phinney Foundation Benefit Ride hosted by Glenn Erickson

April 28, 2010 by David Longdon Leave a Comment

As you may know, Seattle frame builder and national class racer Glenn Erickson was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in August 2009. The good news is that he is doing great–working hard, training with his team, and looking forward to many years of riding and leading tours in Europe. The not so good news is that Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological degenerative disease, with no cure at this time. Currently more than 500,000 people suffer from Parkinsons in the United States alone as well as up to 2% of the entire world population over the age of 60. Fortunately, Glenn has responded well to his medications; plus his disease is progressing slowly with only minimal symptoms.

Glenn and Nancy Erickson, along with Team Byrne Invent, have made a commitment to raise awareness of this disease and to support organizations that help fund research on finding a cure and/or helping people with Parkinson’s live as normal and fulfilled life as possible. To this end we have chosen to support the Davis Phinney Foundation. Davis Phinney, world renowned cyclist and Olympian, has been living with Parkinson’s for over 13 years, and has worked tirelessly through his foundation to raise awareness and funding for research. For us, there is no better way to show our support than a benefit bike ride, with all funds raised going to the Davis Phinney Foundation.

We would like to invite Seattle area cyclists to a unique benefit ride on Sunday, May 16th. For many years, one of Glenn’s favorite activities has been participating in team and group training rides; therefore we would like to create this benefit ride along those lines. So along with the individuals, tandems, and groups that participate in this ride, we will also have three separate group training rides. Group #1 will be for all cat.1, 2, 3 and other very strong riders. This group will ride the long course of 75 miles and will be led by Galen Erickson. Group #2 led by Glenn Erickson will go 63 miles and is intended for all master riders and all other strong riders. The short ride, group #3, will be 33, miles and will be led by Nancy Erickson. This will be a moderate paced social ride.

All three courses are open to all riders, at any time, regardless of ability or pace.

This is a charity ride so please make donations of $10 or more. Donations will be accepted at the start of the ride. All checks can be made out to the Davis Phinney Foundation. Please no credit cards.

Where: Marymoor Park velodrome

When: Sunday May 16th
–Open ride start time, 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM
–Group ride start times, #1 9:30; #2 9:35; #3 9:40

Route: All courses will be along the Snoqualmie River valley. Maps will be provided and the roads will be marked with John Henry direction pointers.

There will be limited support on this ride so come equipped to handle any mechanical issues and food and drink requirements.
