Here in Seattle, late summer and autumn is “Meet the Teams” season. Starting September 8, area teams host conversation-paced rides as a way for folks new to racing, or folks who are thinking about switching teams to meet members of other teams. Each week ~2 teams host rides starting from Pert’s Deli in Leschi.
An important part of the Meet the Teams series is the Intro to Women’s Cycling and Racing Teams Series, which has resulted in the Seattle area having one of the strongest cohorts of womens racers in the US.
The format is similar to the Meet the Teams rides, with the exception that these rides are for women only, and each ride starts with a cycling skills clinic. This series is perfect for women who are new to the racing community, looking to strengthen riding skills, thinking about racing in 2013, or looking to speak with other women about local racing teams or other riding opportunities. Women from many of the local racing teams host and attend each ride, and they are eager to chat it up during the rides.
Dates for 2013: September 16, September 30, and October 7 (all Sundays).
Time: 9:00 AM at Pert’s in Leschi. Prepare to be on the road by 9:10 AM.
Route: A loop around the south end of Lake Washington
Skills: Pacelines, riding a straight line, and racing tactics/techniques.
Depending on turnout, we’ll break into groups no greater than 10 to keep it manageable and go over the basics, making sure to keep things fun and not stressful.

If you followed cycling during the London Olympics you probably noticed that Kirkland native Jennie Reed and her team won the silver medal in the women’s team pursuit, a three-woman track cycling event that covers three kilometers.
As a follow up to Jennie’s Olympic success, Marymoor Velodrome is hosting several events:
Friday, September 7 will be a “Welcome Home” event at Marymoor honoring Jennie. Gates open at 6PM, and Jennie will be available to sign autographs and answer questions.
If you have ambitions to race on the track, check out the Women’s Team Pursuit Clinic on Saturday, September 15th. The organizers of this event aim to leverage the excitement of having a local Olympic medalist in this track discipline to build a large pool of women who want to see if they have what it takes.
This is an introductory class in the basic skills needed to execute a team pursuit. The clinic is open to all levels. All female Cat 4 and above track and road racers who are comfortable riding in a paceline are encouraged to join.
For those who have not taken Marymoor’s basic track class, there will be a 30-minute session at the beginning to go over the basics of track racing. This abbreviated course will teach the basics necessary for the pursuit clinic and will be valid for the day of the clinic, but is not a substitute the official track class necessary to race on the track.
The clinic will be taught by master’s national women’s team pursuit record holder Annette Williams.
When: Saturday, September 15th from 9AM to 1PM
Where: Marymoor Velodrome
Cost: $50 per rider
Registration: Register here. Under Classes select the “Women’s Team Pursuit Clinic”
If you don’t have a track bike, no problemo, the registration fee includes a rental bicycle. If you need a rental, arrive at least 15 minutes early to get one.
Participants may form their own teams of 3 or one can be assigned to you the day of the clinic. There is a 12-rider minimum in order to hold the clinic.
