XWA 2022: Day 3 on the SVT

May 25, 2022 by David Longdon Leave a Comment

Tuesday May 24th, was day 3 of XWA22 (Cross Washington Bikepacking), a 700+ mile ride/race from the La Push on the Olympic Peninsula to Tekoa near the Idaho border. The route is open for riders to do at any time, but the annual "Grand Depart" is more of a race format with a group leaving the start en masse. Bikepacking legend John Stamstad joined me to do the interviews. We … [Read more...] about XWA 2022: Day 3 on the SVT

Ras & Kathy Vaughan: Just Ordinary Human Beings

January 10, 2018 by David Longdon Leave a Comment

Within the progression of ultra running, Ras & Kathy Vaughan are rather unlikely activists. Ras’ first backpacking trip at age 11 ended with his Boy Scout troop being rescued by helicopter. When Ras and Kathy met in 1996 neither had any formal athletic experience, and Ras in particular was doing his utmost to become a member of the obesity epidemic. Because of the relatively remote location, it is as much a project as a backpacking trip, and I was finally able to make it happen in mid-August with a great crew of old friends. Our shared verdict: … [Read more...] about Destination: West Coast Trail

Cloud Hidden, Whereabouts Unknown: Tuck and Robin Lakes

August 15, 2009 by David Longdon Leave a Comment

Time to take a hike, don't you think? For some of us it's near impossible to quell the cycling addiction, if even for just a day, and do something physical that doesn't involve wheels. A few weeks ago I was running hill intervals in Colman Park and got passed by Cascade Bicycle Club's "Wednesday's Bends" group ride as they hammered up the hill. Ride leader Jake … [Read more...] about Cloud Hidden, Whereabouts Unknown: Tuck and Robin Lakes
