Open Water Wednesdays 2021
July 14 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm PDT
An event every week that begins at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, repeating until August 18, 2021
Wed June 16 – Wed August 18, 2021
Open Water Wednesdays (OWW’s) are a coached open water swim workout at Lake Meridian Park in Kent, WA. Participants will swim around a 300 yard buoy course in groups of similar-pace swimmers. Coach Mike Murphy will be in a kayak at the start buoy and will give the groups of swimmers intervals and drills during each workout. It’s combining the best of a coached interval workout and open water swim practice.
In addition to Mike on the buoy course, Coach Alissa Anderson will be near shore working with swimmers on specific skills and helping new open water swimmers get acclimated. Her goal is to get you trained up and out on the buoy course with the main group.
Open Water Wednesdays are a great opportunity for any open water swimmer – you’ll get a good workout in and can practice those open water skills like sighting, turning at buoys,. and getting used to swimming with other people around you.
You may sign up for one workout at a time, or purchase 3 or more workouts for a reduced price. The more workouts you sign up for, the more you’ll save. A 10-workout pass cuts the price of each workout in half
Wetsuits are mandatory! If you don’t own a swim-specific wetsuit – yet – take a look at the blueseventy line that you can find at Northwest Tri & Bike. Swim-specific wetsuits are far superior over the general watersports wetsuits, that can actually make open water swimming harder! blueseventy Wetsuits will bring their demo fleet on June 30th and August 4th so you can give them a test drive in the lake. These are the best suits on the market and are produced right here in Seattle, WA.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The workout will begin at 6:30 so arrive a little early so you can suit up!. There are bathrooms a 5-minute walk away from our meeting place if you need it, but it’s probably more convenient to come prepared with your swimsuit on and then get into your wetsuit at our meeting spot. WETSUITS ARE MANDATORY.
An RTB staff member or volunteer will check you in electronically when you arrive.
If you aren’t able to make a particular swim you signed up for, we can transfer you easily to a different workout. There’s no need to notify us ahead of time. Flexibility is key!
You may leave your belongings at check-in. An RTBer will look after them for you.
We anticipate that experienced swimmers and prepared newbies will be heading out with Coach Mike Murphy to the buoy course. He’ll give you a short explanation each night at our meeting spot near the boat launch and then we’ll walk over together to get in the water. You’ll swim from shore out to the buoy course for a warm-up lap and when you arrive at the start buoy, Mike will give your group instructions. Expect to work hard and have FUN!
If you are new to open water swimming and would like to practice closer to shore for awhile, Coach Alissa Anderson will be in a kayak ready to learn a little about you and help you prepare to head out to the buoy course. Some swimmers stay near shore for a workout or two or three – there’s no pressure to go to the buoy course but she will encourage you to do that when she thinks you’re ready. The buoy course is the best place to practice turn and, sighting and prepare you for open water swimming in a group or race.
