Sun Mountain 50K
May 15 @ 6:00 am - 6:00 pm PDT
An event every year that begins at 6:00 am on day third of May, repeating until May 19, 2024
Located on the eastern, and sunny side of the North Cascades – on the edge of the Chelan Sawtooth Wilderness, above the Methow River Valley – these courses offer great mountain trail running early in the year. You can expect fields of wildflowers, beautiful, snow-capped peaks of the Cascades in the distance, and stunning single-track. In partnership with Methow Trails and Sun Mountain Lodge, we are happy to offer a well supported and scenic race. With about 4800 feet of elevation gain, this is a great beginner ultra!
The race will start and finish at the Cabins at Patterson Lake.
The 50K starts at 8 am.

The start and finish of the race will be at the Patterson Lake Cabins, about a 15 minute drive from Winthrop. There is no parking at the cabins (except for registered overnight guests) so ALL runners, volunteers, and spectators will park in an overflow lot and walk to the start area.
From Highway 20, turn onto Twin Lakes Rd. If you are coming from Twisp, turn left onto Twin Lakes Rd. If you are coming from Winthrop, turn right onto Twin Lakes Rd. Follow this until you veer right onto Patterson Lake Road. You will see the lake on your left and shortly after the lake, the cabins will be on your right (where the start/finish area is located). Continue on Patterson Lake Road and veer right to head towards the Sun Mountain Lodge. The overflow lot will be on your right shortly afterwards. We will have event parking signs posted at the entrance to the lot.
Once you park, there will be a marked trail to lead you down to the cabins. It is about 1/4 mile walk so give yourself a few extra minutes to arrive in the morning. DO NOT FORGET YOUR PHOTO ID. Our volunteers will make you trek back up to the trail to get your ID before you can pick up your bib. There is no overnight parking in the overflow lot. Lodging/camping options are listed below.
AID STATIONS/CUT-OFF TIMES
The 50K will have 4 full aid stations. The cut off times are when runners need to be leaving the aid station. Runners who do not make it out of the aid station by the times listed below will be given a ride back to the start/finish area. Runners will have 8 hours to complete the race.
Lodge: mile 7, cut off at 10:00 am
Chickadee: mile 12, cut off at 11:20 am
Thompson: mile 18.5, cut off at 1:20 pm
Meadowlark: mile 25.8, cut off at 3:00 pm
Each aid station will be stocked with water, Nuun electrolyte drink, peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, fresh fruit, chips, pickles, and assorted cookies or candy. We will have a variety of gels, but we do ask that you only use those to supplement what you are providing for yourself. There will also be first aid supplies, sunscreen, bug spray, and feminine hygiene products for issues that arise on the course. Please ask a volunteer for any of these items.
DROP BAGS/CREW ACCESS/DOGS
Runners have the option to leave a bag for each aid station except Meadowlark. Please label your bag with your name, bib number, and aid station. There will be tarps set up during check-in where you can leave your bags for each aid station. Drop bags come back when the aid stations close. Any not picked up after the race will be out on Sunday during the 25K for runners to grab. If you would like to leave a bag for the finish line, there will be a designated place for those bags during check-in.
No drop bags at Meadowlark.
Crew access is available at Lodge, Chickadee, and Thompson aid stations. Please click here to view/download aid station driving directions.
No crew access at Meadowlark. We encourage spectators to carpool or to choose one or two aid stations to see their runners instead of all three to reduce congestion.
Dogs are NOT allowed on our Sun Mountain courses or at the start/finish. Our permits are contingent on our runners following this rule and we appreciate your cooperation.
