Welcome to the Wy’east Howl, the premier trail running event on Mt. Hood! The Howl offers wildly scenic 100K, 50K and half marathon trail running races on Oregon’s most famous volcano, Wy’east (say “why-east”, the native name for Mt. Hood) including the iconic Timberline Trail. As the only ultramarathons and trail half marathon held on the slopes of Mt. Hood proper, the event provides an incomparably up-close, scenic and beautiful trail race experience.

The event is staged at Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Area, offering a family-friendly, full service venue high up on the mountain. Runners, friends and family are treated to incredible views under the Wy’east summit, where we’ll celebrate every race finisher’s accomplishment together with awards, raffle prizes, excellent food, craft beverages, live music and fun activities at the lodge patio finish line.

Land Acknowledgement: We honor and recognize that we gather for this event on the traditional lands of the Molalla, Kalapuyan, Chinookan Clackamas, Wasco and Wishram, and Northern Paiute peoples and other Sahaptin speakers have occupied and stewarded these lands for countless generations.

100K

The 100K course offers an unforgettably scenic tour on Mt. Hood’s lush volcanic slopes and its eastern backcountry. The course is a lollipop format, starting and finishing at Mt. Hood Meadows. Awe-inspiring mountain views and superb backcountry trails await along this challenging course!

The course is very diverse featuring a variety of mountain environments on mostly runnable dirt singletrack, with some long hill climbs, various rocky technical sections and a few loose talus fields, as well as midsummer wildflower meadows, exposed ridges, sub-alpine forests with waterfalls, brisk streams and springs. There are intermittent sections of rugged, unmaintained jeep roads, which are often more technical than the trails! The backcountry section also features a fascinating mix of climate zones being on the divide between wet western Oregon and dry central Oregon high desert.
