Welcome to the Wy’east Howl, the premier trail running event on Mt. Hood! The Howl offers wildly scenic 100K, 50K and half marathon trail running races on Oregon’s most famous volcano, Wy’east (say “why-east”, the native name for Mt. Hood) including the iconic Timberline Trail. As the only ultramarathons and trail half marathon held on the slopes of Mt. Hood proper, the event provides an incomparably up-close, scenic and beautiful trail race experience.

The event is staged at Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Area, offering a family-friendly, full service venue high up on the mountain. Runners, friends and family are treated to incredible views under the Wy’east summit, where we’ll celebrate every race finisher’s accomplishment together with awards, raffle prizes, excellent food, craft beverages, live music and fun activities at the lodge patio finish line.

Land Acknowledgement: We honor and recognize that we gather for this event on the traditional lands of the Molalla, Kalapuyan, Chinookan Clackamas, Wasco and Wishram, and Northern Paiute peoples and other Sahaptin speakers have occupied and stewarded these lands for countless generations.

HALF MARATHON

Welcome to the only trail half marathon on Mt. Hood! The course offers magnificent views and an adventurous loop-style course located entirely on the volcano, starting and finishing at Mt. Hood Meadows main lodge. The course travels through a diverse range of subalpine forest and wildflower meadows, offering a true mountain challenge with 2,550′ of elevation gain and 2,550′ of loss over 13.1 miles at an average elevation of 5400’.

The course is 99% dirt singletrack. There is one significant climb, mixed with fun, fast descents and rolling hills. Spectacular scenery abounds around almost every corner, with Mt. Hood summit views wildflower meadows along the Timberline Trail, southern views down the Cascade Crest to Mt. Jefferson, the rim of Clark Canyon looking across to Gnarl Ridge, as well as an up-close pass by refreshing Umbrella Falls. There are many small stream crossings and meadow springs to hop over as well.
