March 21…
Cascade Bicycle Club’s High Performance Cycling‘s first team ride of the season featured a nutrition clinic by Cycle U coach Kristi Berg. Lots of good discussion ensued, and it might have gone on except for the fact that it was 33 degrees, everyone was shivering, and a half hour of standing idle was about all that even the most stoic could handle.
For 2009, Team HPC is divided into two self-selected groups:
“Expert:” Cyclists who already have the bike handling skills and fitness to ride in a rotating paceline at a strenuous effort level, and the endurance to ride at least 50 miles.
“Development:” Cyclists who are working towards becoming an expert cyclist and want the support of stronger riders and coaching to help them.
The team currently has about 60 members, most of whom have classified themselves in the development group.
After the clinic, the two groups headed out for 25-35 miles of cycling. The expert group rode ahead of the development group so that anyone who fell off the expert pace could fall in with them.
Post-ride, there was general agreement that the respective paces of the two groups were appropriately challenging.
The High Performance Cycling Team hosts its next “meet the team” ride on April 25. Check the Cascade ride calendar for details.
