After four years developing World Tour road racing skills with EF Education First, 26-year old Bremerton native Logan Owen finds himself going into 2022 without a contract.
As a youngster and teen, Logan was widely recognized as a cyclocross savant. He won ten consecutive US national cyclocross championships. He then went on to make a name for himself on the road as a member of the Junior Cal-Giant/Specialized team, and as an under-23 (U23) with Axeon Hagens Berman. He won the U23 Liège-Bastogne-Liège at age 21, and a stage of the Tour of Utah while he was with Axeon.
Logan thinks a combination of factors contributed to not getting a contract. During 2021, he suffered a series of injuries that affected his fitness. The most significant blow was that he was pulled from the Giro. He also notes that the pandemic has changed the race schedule (fewer) and race tactics (full gas, all the time). As a result, there are limited venues for racers to show off.
He’s in the process of returning home to the Seattle area with his girlfriend and dogs, which because of the pandemic is logistically complicated. He’s hoping to make it back before Christmas.
Looking ahead, Logan says he’s investigating possibilities in mountain biking, gravel, and a return to cyclocross.
