Cycle the ALS DoubleDay

There is certainly no lack of charity bicycle events–all of them for great causes–and it can sometimes be difficult to choose which ones to join.

If you are looking for a ride this weekend, consider the ALS DoubleDay up in Skagit County. The two-day ride covers about 85 miles, with optional extra loops that yield a total of 97 miles.

Day one rolls through flat farmlands and tulip fields, and day two travels eastward and into rolling terrain for a bit more challenge. There is an optional dinner Saturday evening that is typically a highlight of the weekend and gives riders, friends, and family an opportunity to learn more about one another. Sunday’s ride starts with a *yum* pancake breakfast at 7:30.

For serious cyclists, the two-day route goes through some of Washington’s most beautiful terrain. The view of Mt. Baker from the Skagit Valley is spectacular. For new cyclists, the DoubleDay is a great introduction to organized event rides.

Gregg’s Cycles has provided generous support and will be on hand to provide mechanical assistance.

About ALS
Often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. I have a personal interest in supporting the ALS Association and participating in events like this. My mom, an uncle, and a cousin of theirs all succumbed to ALS. We’re not sure whether the familial version of ALS is running through our DNA, but it kinda looks like it.

Last year I dedicated my Oregon Ultimate Ride to my family and the ALS Association and raised over $6,000. Please email me if this is a cause you’d like to support and I’ll let you know how to make a contribution.
