Saturday: Local Triathlete Supports American Diabetes Association Benefit Walks

In support of several local American Diabetes Association (ADA) events this Saturday, October 10, triathlete and Issaquah resident Bobby Heyer will be kicking off the local Seattle ADA Walk in Seattle at 8:00 am and will close the Tacoma ADA Walk at 10:00 am.

Team Type 1 is a team of amateur and professional athletes living with type 1 diabetes, and Team Type 2 is a team of amateur cyclists living with type 2 diabetes, who are out to inspire others through sharing their stories of athletic dedication and accomplishments.

In 2004, Phil Southerland and Joe Eldridge, both diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as children, set out to prove to themselves and others that having diabetes doesn’t mean you can’t achieve your goals. Together, Southerland and Eldridge founded Team Type 1. Since then, the amateur cycling team has competed in, and twice won, the 3,052 mile-long Race Across America (RAAM). In addition to their mission of spreading diabetes awareness, Team Type 1 also has a long-term goal as competitive cyclists: to compete in the Tour de France!

In 2009, Team Type 1 expanded its roster and fielded five athletic teams:
1. A men’s professional cycling team
2. a women’s professional cycling team,
both featuring a mixed roster of riders with and without type 1 diabetes

3. An elite 2009 RAAM team comprised entirely of riders with type 1 diabetes

4. A triathlon team whose members all have type 1 diabetes.

5. Team Type 2, an amateur cycling team featuring riders with 2 diabetes.
