Great article in today’s NY Times with tips from members of (I’m having a hard time keeping track of their name; they got renamed yesterday, and have too many names to begin with) Team Garmin-Chipotle Presented by H30:
Racer Christian Vande Velde and manager Jonathan Vaughters cite the training virtues of power meters over heart rate monitors, which contrasts to another section in the article about wise use of your bicycle budget. I’d love to add a power meter, but question the benefits of a ~$1,000 outlay for a recreational cyclist.
Team physiologist and nutritionist Allen Lim reveals the recipe for his top secret rice, egg, and bacon sushi bars. I’m not a bacon eater, but Lim’s Nutella, peanut butter and rice bars sound like a good veggie alternative.
And the secret to hill climbing? Lim says: “Study the altitude-gain profile of the race you’re doing, Mr. Lim said. “Then climb at least that much, at least once or twice a week. If the race has 3,000 feet of climbing, find a hill that’s 500 feet and climb it six times, fast, no resting between.“
Sounds great, in theory. How many Interlaken Blvd. repeats is that for an upcoming race that has 10K of climbing??
