Bremerton’s Logan Owen, now 20, continues to forge ahead with a promising cycling career. Logan is widely recognized for his cyclocross chops (Logan has won ten consecutive national cyclocross championships), but he has also been making a name for himself on the road as a member of the Junior Cal-Giant/Specialized team, and now as an under-23 (U23) with Axeon.
I recently checked in with Logan to see what he is up to:
You are now with Axeon, owned and directed by Axel Merckx. Tell us about the progression to the new team and what it means for your career.
I was on Cal-Giant/Specialized for my junior year and had been talking with Axel for a couple years about coming to Axeon when I moved up to the U23 age group. It was a huge honor to be talking to Axel about coming to his team at such a young age. Since Cal-Giant is an amateur team logically the next step for me was to move on to another development team that allowed me to do bigger races such as Amgen Tour of California, USA Pro Challenge, etc. I believe being a part of Axeon is going to help me achieve the top level of cycling.
Looking back, and now that you are an established competitor in the U23 ranks, talk about the role that racing in the Pacific Northwest played in your development.
Being able to race the older cat 1/2 guys as a junior locally in the PNW really helped me develop much quicker and be able to make that step up into the U23 ranks much easier. It also helped that a few of the guys who would show up every weekend were domestic pros or ex pros and forced me to get much faster if I wanted to still be competitive. By the time I moved up into the U23 ranks I was already at the level of most of the top U23’s in the world which made my first year as a U23 pretty successful.
What races are you looking forward to in 2015?
I’m really looking forward to the U23 Liège-Baston-Liège, Amgen Tour of California and the World Road Race Championships in Richmond, VA in September.
What should your hometown fans look for in your upcoming races?
Hopefully some awesome results by myself and/or my teammates!
As your career progresses, where does cyclocross fit?
Cyclocross is still a big part of my cycling career and I plan on racing full seasons until I move out of the U23’s. I love both Road and Cyclocross a ton and I want to race both for as long as possible.
