In beautiful brisk Fall weather, many of Seattle’s top cycling athletes gathered in Leschi Thanksgiving morning for the Northwest Harvest charity ride. Organized by Mick and Martha Walsh who ride with team First Rate Mortgage, this annual event typically raises about $500. As of this post, however, Mick estimates this year’s ride generated nearly $1,500. About 1/4 mile of two-abreast riders rolled out of Leschi, and we guessed there were at least 150 in the group.
The ride was also an opportunity to meet veteran members of the Seattle bicycle community.
Along the way, I chatted with Gina Kavesh, currently racing for Wines of Washington, and who has a 14-year bike racing history in Seattle. Gina is taking her extensive racing experience to focus on mentoring women who are new to bicycle racing.
I also spent time chatting with frame builder and European bicycle touring guide Glenn Erickson. Glenn was quite modest about his accomplishments, but he has a long intimate history with cycling in Seattle that has touched racers and recreational riders alike.
Congratulations to Mick and Martha for facilitating a successful fund raiser this year!
