Bike to Work Breakfast 2014

For several years now I’ve had the good fortune of joining bicycle attorney John Duggan and his guests at the annual Cascade Bicycle Club Bike to Work Breakfast. This year’s edition was held yesterday, Tuesday May 6 at the Sheraton.

John Duggan's table was animated with bicycle chatter and networking.

This was the first Breakfast with the Cascade Bicycle Club’s new Executive Director, Elizabeth Kiker. This year’s Breakfast presented Cascade in a new and different light, with an emphasis on the Major Taylor Project, and the people I chatted with about it all had positive things to say.

YES! Foundation's Executive Director Pat Thompson gave a teary-eyed account of the Major Taylor Project's positive impacts on her students.

Phil Miller articulated his sentiments this way:

“Great Cascade Bicycle Club Bike to Work Breakfast today in Seattle…sure, 900 attendees and 45 elected officials in the room is good; the congratulatory back-pounding for Bike Master Plan II and the reveal of Pronto Bike Share powered by Alaska Airlines is awesome, but what made this special is as clear an articulation of what CBC is becoming as I’ve heard – Elizabeth Kiker and Ed Ewing left no doubt that ‘bicycling in Seattle will be promoted for the benefit of all, without regard for age, gender, economic or social status.’ Well done – I think CBC is back on track.”

Student Brook Negussie described his progression through the Major Taylor Project's program.

The highlight for me was the brief remarks by Global Connections High School senior Brook Negussie who recounted how intimidated he felt on his first 10-mile ride, progressed to riding the Seattle to Portland event, and how his successes on the bike have translated to the rest of his life, including academic excellence and his acceptance to the University of Washington.
