Jeff Youngstrom: Most Visible Night Cyclist for December

The winner for December is Jeff Youngstrom!

Jeff is a 14-year resident of Issaquah, and his household is going on its third year without a car.

Jeff’s passion for human-powered commuting extends beyond outfitting a well-lit bicycle. A few years back he was a citizen advisor for Issaquah’s non-motorized transportation plan, and recently founded GAIT, which is a budding resource for bicycle and pedestrian advocates in the Issaquah area.

Jeff says:
I don’t get ignored much with this setup 😉 The jacket is from Showers Pass, my helmet is a Bell Metro (in dayglo orange, but you can’t tell that from this picture) The headlight is a Cygo Light.

Check out Jeff’s seasonal adjustments, sure to bring a smile to other cyclists and motorists alike:

Jeff advises:
The cool blue glow is a Down Low Glow available in many other pretty colors in addition to the ice blue I got. The colored lights are battery-powered LED stars. The stars run for about an hour on a charged set of six AA NiMH batteries. Not sure how long the Down Low Glows run since I haven’t had to recharge it yet (they claim about 2.5 hours and that’s looking about right).

No matter how many lights you have, drivers will still manage to not see you, so make sure you see them. The one time I was hit by a car was at high noon on a sunny day. That said, the Down Low Glows definitely seems to break through the invisibility field a little more often. I notice a lot of craning necks 😉

One set of Christmas lights on each side of the snap deck on my xtracycle.

Thanks, Jeff, for your example-setting effort. Hopefully your contribution will inspire other bicycle commuters to have fun illuminating themselves as well as you do.
