Obliteride 2016–Next Weekend August 12-14

Obliteride, one of Seattle’s most popular charity rides, happens next weekend August 12-14. 100% of the funds raised by Obliteride participants support the lifesaving cancer research at Fred Hutch. Obliteride has sponsors who pay the charity’s organizational costs.

Course marshal volunteers are desperately needed for the 10 mile route on Sunday Aug. 14. You can volunteer here.

More than 1,400 people are already signed up for this year’s Obliteride. But, Amy Lavin, Obliteride’s executive director, says “There’s still time to sign up!”

Obliteride’s routes range from 10 to 165 miles. The 10-mile family ride around Seattle’s Lake Union is an easy pedal that takes about an hour and requires no training. For safety, one lane along Westlake and Eastlake avenues will be coned off for the ride, so it’s a good option for the entire family. Funds raised from this route benefit women’s cancer research at Fred Hutch.

People interested in participating can still sign up to ride, donate or volunteer. Riders have until Sept. 15 to complete their fundraising.

In addition to the bike rides, Obliteride includes parties, live entertainment and delicious food. All riders are treated to a kickoff party at Gas Works Park on Friday, Aug. 12. The party includes a Tom Douglas salmon dinner. The Friday kickoff party is a private event to thank the riders, who are required to raise at least $500 to participate.

I’ve participated twice and I can report that it’s one of the coolest cycling events in Seattle. The food and party on Friday night is awesome! I’ve done the 100-mile route riding (with friends who are cancer survivors and researchers at Fred Hutch) and it is very well supported. There is great finish line food and entertainment. It feels great to be part of such a high-profile community event to support one of the premier cancer research facilities in the world.
