Obliteride: New 100-Miler & Early-Bird Rate

Obliteride celebrates its fifth year in 2017 with a new 100-mile route on Sunday August 13. The new route to the south and east of Seattle is described as one of the flattest and most scenic century rides in the region. In previous years the 100-mile route ascended challenging Tiger Mountain Road and SE Newport Way; this year’s route follows the flat Cedar River Trail to Hobart then loops around on country roads through Black Diamond and Maple Valley before returning to Seattle via the Trail.

Register and raise $250 by May 5 and the fundraising commitment is only $250. Riders must also be able to get to milepost 34 by 11:30 a.m. (8 mph pace).

100-mile training plan

Obliteride offers an entire weekend of free food, entertainment, and connection around its goal of raising money to help Fred Hutch cure cancer faster. The weekend begins with a Friday evening kickoff party at Gas Works Park, which includes a Tom Douglas salmon dinner.

I cycled 100 miles with this motley crew in 2015, which included two Fred Hutch researchers, and two cancer survivors.

Last year, more than 1,500 people rode Obliteride. There are four routes to choose from, so everyone from rookies to road warriors can join the ride to cure cancer. Participants raise $250 to $1,000 depending on the distance they ride. Every dollar riders raise goes to Fred Hutch. Since its inception Obliteride, has raised more than $9 million for lifesaving cancer research at Fred Hutch.

Participation in Obliteride is a great way to support a global leader in cancer research: Given the anti-science political climate (pun intended) these days, Fred Hutch needs support more than ever.
