Shadows & Light @ Seward Park

Thursday evenings during the Spring and Summer, bicycle racing is on at the upper loop road in Seward park. Over the years I’ve shot video and images of the action, but have been chronically frustrated with the results. Part of the frustration is that I’ve tried to keep it simple and shoot with a compact camera: The mottled light, combined with racers zipping around at high speed makes for challenging photographic conditions, even with an expensive DSLR camera.

I recently got a Sony RX100 compact camera, touted as one of the top inventions of 2012. The RX 100 boasts the largest sensor (1 inch) in a compact camera, as well a few other features that make it slightly easier (and more fun) to capture decent images under difficult lighting conditions.

Here are a few images from last Thursday:

These guys looked super enthusiastic at the start of the 6:00 race. Or is that game face?
The race slows down a bit to navigate the hairpin at the NW corner of the course.
Racers exiting the hairpin turn at the top of the course.
Racers accelerate out of the hairpin onto the straightaway at the top of the course.

Riders eastbound at the top of the course.
